Widely available, bamboo is the fastest-growing plant on Earth and regrows from its roots once harvested. This plant requires no insecticide, no pesticide, and very little water to thrive. 

The following FAQ was written with bamboo specialist Dr. Hans Friedrich (FRGS, Global Ambassador, World Bamboo Organisation and Senior Advisor, European Bamboo Programme of Bamboologic, the Netherlands).

What is bamboo?

Bamboo is a sustainable plant that belongs to the grass family, the Graminea. Current estimations are listing 1600 different varieties of bamboo, covering nearly 50 million hectares.

One of the most striking quality of bamboo is its amazing speed of growth. The variety used in our ethically sourced bamboo drink grows up to 1m (3.2 ft.) per day! Essentially the fastest growing plant in the world! But the best part is yet to come.  

Why is bamboo so sustainable?

Bamboo grows in most climates, without pesticide, without insecticide, and needs only little natural watering to thrive.

Due to its rapid growth, bamboo absorbs considerable amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. Captured CO2 remains locked in, once bamboo are transformed into durable goods. A well-managed bamboo plantation therefore provides a secure carbon sink as the plant is very effective at capturing carbon dioxide. In return, bamboo forests release fresh oxygen into the atmosphere.

What are the benefits of sustainably harvesting bamboo?

Sustainably harvesting mature bamboo helps promoting a healthier growth and allows the rest of the ecosystem to flourish. In fact, bamboo forests are best managed as agricultural crops, with a predefined annual harvesting plan. Carbon capture is therefore optimized. And in return, bamboo forests provide clean oxygen.

Also, bamboo doesn’t need to be replanted! Once harvested, this renewable plant regenerates from its own roots, and starts re-growing. Again and again.

In other words, bamboo provides a high-performance alternative, allowing beautiful hardwood trees to stay intact!

Why is bamboo harvested?

Bamboo is a very versatile and renewable material, with many possible applications. Nowadays, bamboo can be used to build furniture, create sustainable textiles (check some amazing bamboo-made sleepwear here), paper, tableware, as a food source, etc. The list is literally endless.

Once harvested, the entire bamboo – shoot, stem, and leaves - can be used. Hence, none of the bamboo parts is wasted.
